Jack, Mike, and the two guards descended the one hundred step staircase to the basement of the facility. In the basement there were many scientists performing tests with different plant killers and fertilizers, frantically trying to find a solution to their overwhelming problem. They came to a door marked "105" and went inside. In the room there was a table, two metal chairs and a steel box with a window that looked to be heavily reinforced. "This was our 105th test subject, the one we were most successful with in our experiments. It is fully alive and contained, so it is harmless. Go ahead and" "Shhhh." Mike interrupted. An awkward silence filled the room, and Jack and the guards all looked at eachother in confusion. The silence continued for a few more minutes, and finally Mike looked away from the box and over at Jack. "I know what to do now," Mike said with the utmost certainty. "It might not work, but it is the only chance we have. Gather everyone you have available, we are going outside. Oh, and tell them to bring some water."
Jack and the guards looked more confused than ever now, and seemed almost a bit angry with Mike. "What do you mean? What did it say to you? Going outside is suicide! Especially if we are carrying water. Mike, you will get us all killed, I won't send my employees out to die." "Your choice then," replied Mike with a raised brow. "I'll be needing a bucket of water, because I'm going out there. You can all wait here and die when the plants come and take your water, or you can offer some water to the plants and hope for friendship. The only way for humans to survive this catastrophe is to live in true harmony with the plants, if they'll have us." Mike's bracelet beeped again, and he immediately smashed it against the wall, and upon seeing it broken to bits, he wished he would have thought of that earlier.
Everything was so clear in Mike's mind now, thanks to his conversation with the experiment plant, and he wanted to help the plant get out of that box. "Jack," Mike said. "Let me take experiment 105 out with me as well, so I can show the other plants that we mean no harm." "If there is a chance it will help, then go for it," said Jack. So they gathered up the plant and some water, and followed Mike to the door. "Good luck," said Jack and the two guards in unison. "Thanks, I'll need it," replied Mike. Mike carried the water in his left hand while the small plant rode on his shoulder, gripping Mike with his roots. Just as they crested the hill near the facility, there was a change in the wind. The air got a bit warmer, and moister too. And directly below Mike's feet there was a slight rumble beginning in the earth. "They're coming," Mike and the plant said to each other.

Chapter 7: The Truth
The earth was cracked and dry, and there wasn't the tiniest sign of moisture anywhere. Mike continued looking, and noticed that the earth that was near the building was scorched. "It was probably from the flamethrowers" he thought. "What exactly is happening out there?" asked Mike. "Well, since we will all be dead soon, I might as well tell you," replied Jack. "Every bit of plant life on our planet has come to life, and is quite literally sucking the earth dry. We are battling with the plants now, trying to keep them away from our main water sources, but our ability to fight them is limited. We prepared for all of this, thought we could control it. We were going to make more money on this than the big oil companies ever dreamed of. Provide food and water to everyone, create new jobs reconstructing cities all across the world."
"The plants took over much faster than we thought, and they were able to spread the fertilizer without our help. The worst part of it is that the plants are intelligent, we aren't sure if this is a side effect of the fertilizer or if this was always the case. But after just one shot from our flamethrowers, they knew the effective range of them and to keep their distance. The entire world is under siege, and we have enough water here to hold out for about a month if we can keep the plants out." Mike was welling up with anger, and had his fist curled by this time. His blood was beginning to boil, his heart pumping adrenaline through his system. The bracelet beeped, and Mike drew his fist back to hit Jack. What Mike got instead was the butt of a gun in the side of the head. Mike staggered and dropped to his knees, and Jack knelt down to meet eyes with him. "There is nothing we can do about it now, so there is no use for violence Mike," Jack said. "How else would you expect me to react? Did you really think you could just own the world?" Mike's eyes flared with anger.
"There has to be a way to stop this, to remove what the fertilizer has done, right?" asked Mike. "There are none that we know of yet, although we are working on a plant killer that we can use on a global scale." said Jack. "A global scale? Certainly that is not necessary considering the fertilizer is not everywhere, right? Every bit of life on the planet would be wiped out if you did that, and even if you found a way to localize it to just one continent, the effect on the planet would be incalculable." Mike continued his speech, and his tone changed to a helpful one. "When the fertilizer first arrived at the nursery, the guys and I took a dare. I ate a spoonful of it, and was really sick that night." "Go on," said Jack. "The next morning was really strange, I didn't touch my breakfast, and drank 3 glasses of water. When I got outside, I felt like I was in a nice warm bath, the sun felt so relaxing and my head was spinning with thoughts that were not my own. Maybe the plants were trying to communicate with me, or maybe I was just sick from the fertilizer, I don't really know yet."
"The fact that you survived eating it is a miracle, and it would be a miracle for us if you could communicate with the plants." Jack seemed excited about this new development. "Shall we test your theory out Mike?" asked Jack. "It might just be our only hope," said Mike.

Chapter 6: A Cold Place
Mike awoke to a cold hard bed, one made from cement, and similar to those found in the local prison. He could hear some noise that he couldn't quite make out yet, coming from an adjacent room in the facility. When Mike picked up his head, the throbbing pain from earlier immediately returned, sending him back to the icy cement slab. A bracelet, on Mike's right wrist told the time, date, and had a small red blinking light that indicated seconds passing. Mike reached over with his left hand to further examine the bracelet, but upon touching it he was poked by the bracelet. This sent Mike straight back into his unconscious world, where he had been for 36 hours already.
When Mike awoke again, there was a tray on the bed across from him. Mike was famished and the smell was amazing, even though it was just a basic nutritional meal of pot roast and mashed potatoes with a side of broccoli. Also included with his meal was one bottle of water, which appeared to have been opened for him. At first, Mike could barely get the fork to his mouth, but before long he was ravaging his plain meal. Just as he was finishing up, there was a loud buzzing sound.
The sound of footsteps coming closer and closer made Mike's heart race. His hands were still shaking from low blood sugar, and though he was too weak to fight, Mike felt like he had to. There were three men, one of them wearing a lab coat. The other two were wearing dark suits, and were heavily armed. One man carried a flamethrower, and the other had two small machine guns. Both men carried machetes on their back as well. "Mike, you're awake." The man in the lab coat said. "Glad to see you are eating now. Get some more rest, you're going to need it." Just then, another poke from the bracelet came and put Mike back to sleep. The next time Mike awoke there was finally a familiar face, but not a friendly one. Jack Sperino greeted Mike with a smile, "Good morning sunshine." "What is this place? Why do you keep putting me to sleep?", Mike questioned. Jack's guards were dressed the same as the other scientist's, and armed similarly too. They were both clean cut, well built, and had a certain attitude to them that said, "don't try anything".
"Come with us," said Jack. "It's clear that you won't believe this until you see it. Be ready though, because everything you know has changed quite drastically over the last few days." Mother Nature's facility stood on a small hill outside of town, and from up there, you could see for miles. When they got to the window, Mike gasped for air. There was too much for him to take in. Homes were wrecked, windows broken and doors missing, trash strewn about everywhere. There were cars overturned, even roads that had literally been ripped up. The strangest part about everything was that every little bit of plant life was gone. The once lush, green scenery had now become a dry, barren wasteland.

Chapter 5: White Coats
When Mike arrived at work, there were two police cars outside in addition to his employees. They all looked a little baffled. "What's going on?" asked Mike. "Someone has robbed us. Almost all of the plants are gone." "What do you mean gone?" asked Mike. But Mike didn't wait for their reply, he stomped off toward the front door. The first thing Mike noticed was that the glass was broken on both doors, and the doors were still locked. Upon entry, Mike saw that all of the planters were still there, and the larger bushes and trees that were in the back had their gunnysack that covers the rootball cut or torn away. Everything still seemed to be there other than the plants, and something was strange about how they disappeared.
"No one stole these plants." said a man in a white coat. The man had entered while Mike was looking around, and everything about him was suspicious. His hair was slicked back, and pulled into a small pony tail in the back, he had thick eyebrows and his glasses were mirrored so there was no way to see his eyes. He was only about 5'6", and he was a bit heavy in the midsection. "A team is on the way to clean this up. We will replace all of your plants, and fix the door. There is nothing for you to worry about." Mike approached the man, and noticed a badge on the right side of the man's coat. "Jack Sperino" "Lead Scientist" it read. "You work for 'Mother Nature' right?" questioned Mike. "Tell me something, if these plants were not stolen, what did happen to them?" "You should know," replied Jack. "You used the fertilizer on them after all."
"The fertilizer was created to accelerate plant growth, just as any other fertilizer would be." Jack explained. "But for this product, we engineered an additive that accelerated plants to five times their normal growth rate. That wasn't enough though, our CEO wanted more from this product. She told us that we needed to improve it further. Something was different when we experimented with various amino acid and DNA alterations." Just then, Mike felt something poke into his neck, and he immediately began to feel nauseous and tired. Just before he fell asleep, he reached back, removed the dart from his neck, and asked "What was different?" Jack kneeled down over Mike's unconscious body, smiled and whispered, "After today it won't matter."

Chapter 4: Assimilation
2:30 A.M
Mike awoke to a buzzing sound, turned to shut off his alarm, and realized it wasn't his alarm. The covers were soaking with sweat and everything seemed to be spinning. It was like being stuck on the teacups at disneyland while in the middle of a bad stomach flu. Everything, even his veins were riddling him with painful jolts. Mike struggled to get from his bed to the bathroom and barely made it to the toilet before he was vomiting. Mike gathered a big mixing bowl, some water, and some aspirin and made his way back to bed.
The stomach pains and spinning had stopped by 6:30, so Mike decided he would be okay to go into work today. He poured himself some cereal, and paused after just one bite. He gave the cereal a funny look and checked the date on his milk to make sure it hadn't gone bad. "Something doesn't taste right", thought Mike. Mike finished his cereal anyway and headed out to work. It was sunny this morning, with a few patchy clouds here and there. "The weather is so nice today", Mike said to himself. There was something different about how the sun felt on his skin that morning, but there was something even more peculiar than that.
"What is happening to me? Am I just hearing things?" Mike was very worried that he was going over the deep end, because from the moment he stepped outside, he had been hearing things. Not hearing though, it was as though thoughts were entering his mind, thoughts that weren't his. It was all very unclear, and he couldn't really make sense of it. On the way to work, the thoughts became a bit louder and made his headache much worse, he felt like his brain might burst from the stress. Through the night and that morning, something had been changing within him, and he had no idea what was coming next.

Chapter 3: Fertilizer
Dinner was cold pizza from the day before, and before Mike knew it, the alarm was buzzing again. Monday had arrived too soon, as it usually does, and the alarm was slapped, as it usually was. Steam rose from behind the shower curtain, milk was poured into the cereal bowl, and Mike was ready to start his day. The end of the month had arrived, so there was a lot of accounting work to be done at the nursery, and with the new product coming in this would put an extra strain on his day.
The "Mother Nature" truck had already arrived at the nursery when Mike got there, and was starting to offload the pallets. The guys were there helping the driver and Mike just gave them a short wave on his way in. After getting to his office and doing a bit of organizing, Mike quickly headed out to see the new product. The fertilizer was the usual white color, and it was in small pellets just like any fertilizer. The smell however, was something that no one could seem to get over. It was almost like sulfur, methane, and rotten fruit were piled up and then painted with a can of white spray paint. The scent was so foul in fact that the truck driver was wearing a mask over his mouth and nose to deter the stench inside of his truck. "Are you sure this stuff is okay to sell?" Asked Mike. "Yeah yeah, It's totally fine, the smell is a bit off though haha," laughed the driver. Mike signed off on the delivery papers, and went back to his business.
"Should we try this stuff out on some of our plants?" Asked Robert. Robert was still just a teenager, and though he did have a funny side to him, he was almost always serious about every topic. He was not particularly religious, or maybe he just didn't like to talk about it much, but there was always something mysterious about him. And though Mike was busy with his month end work, he was curious about the new fertilizer too and couldn't wait to see what it could do. They applied fertilizer to all of the plants in the nursery, and to their amazement, nothing happened. "So it was just a gimmick after all," exclaimed Mike. "I researched this stuff all weekend just to see nothing happen." "I'll give you $20 if you put some in your coffee." said Robert. "If it didn't do anything to the plants, it won't do anything to you." "You must be crazy if you think I would eat fertilizer, why don't you eat some yourself?" said Mike with a bit of retort. "I'll do it when you do," said Robert.
Strangely enough, they both ate a spoonful of the fertilizer. But after Mike swallowed his down with some coffee, Robert spit his out with laughter. "I can't believe you actually ate some!" Robert was rolling with laughter, tears welling up in his eyes, when he received a light kick from Mike. They both finished their day in high spirits and prepared for the release of the new fertilizer tomorrow. It was projected to be one of the busiest days of the year, with all the press that had been buzzing about this stuff. Dinner was salmon creole with an assortment of vegetables, one of Mike's home favorites. Afterward Mike went out bowling with some of his friends, had a few drinks, and passed out on his couch soon after.

Chapter 2: The Company
Mike went out to the local diner that night. About once a week he would go down there for some Chicken Marsala. It was a favorite meal of his, and Mike was definitely in the mood to celebrate. The next day at work Mike was sorting through some mail in his new office when the phone rang again. It seemed to ring constantly, with different vendors calling all the time. This particular call was from a big corporate office, in fact it was the biggest corporation the industry had known.
"Mother Nature" was it's name, and they always seemed to have some new product coming out to make things easier for the home gardener, landscaper, or local resident. "Hi, this is Bill with Mother Nature. How are you doing today?" "I'm fine", replied Mike. "How can I help you today?" "We have a new fertilizer that we are introducing to the world next week, one that will change everything." said Bill. "Would you like to have some of this revolutionary product in your nursery? I am sure your customers will love it." "Of course", said Mike. "I have seen the commercials about this fertilizer already, supposed to accelerate plant growth to five times the normal growth rate right?" "That's the one", replied Bill. "I'll send you a couple pallets to arrive on monday. The bill will come later in the month." "Thanks so much" said Mike, "I'll look forward to it." Friday was almost over now, and Mike was just finishing up watering the plants. He noticed the magnolias were starting to bud, and the climatis were in full bloom. On the bike ride home, he wondered about something. How on earth can you accelerate a plant's growth by five times? I have been using the same fertilizer for years, and it does help the plants grow faster, but not even double the speed of a regular plant.
Over the weekend Mike decided to do some research on plant growth, and on "Mother Nature" to see if he could figure any of it out. He found that with just the right acidity in the soil, and just right conditions, you can make a plant grow faster. But "Mother Nature" turned out to be very mysterious about their new product. There was very little information posted about the chemicals used in the fertilizer, and even less about the research behind it. But the media for it was everywhere, on his facebook, on television, in the newspaper ads, and in the news. On Sunday Mike even received a mailer about it. "This new fertilizer is going to be a big deal I guess."

Chapter 1: Plant "Life"
It was 6:00 A.M., and the alarm was buzzing annoyingly. Mike quickly sprang from his curled up warm place on the bed, because today was going to be a big day. Quickly, he poured himself some cereal, and got ready for work. By 8:00 A.M. he had pedaled his bike down to the nursery for work. His boss had some big news for him today and Mike was feeling good about it. "Ahh there you are Mike", said Julie. Julie was the owner of several nurseries around the state. She was tall, with green eyes and brown hair. Julie had always been a good boss to Mike, and he was a great employee to her. Mike absolutely loved caring for plants, although he wasn't compensated very well for it. "Please, come into my office." Julie said. Now this was unusual, Julie had just given Mike a review the previous month, and he hadn't been sick or anything lately.
"How would you like to be the new manager of this nursery?", asked Julie. "I, well uhhm, I don't know what to say, I mean I have never had that kind of responsibility before." replied Mike. "Nonsense, I have seen how you love your job Mike, You practically live here with the plants. The pay is $42,000 per year, and you will have 4 weeks paid vacation, so what do you say?" "I'll do it" replied Mike, "but on one condition." "Anything" said Julie. "I still get to be out here with the guys caring for the plants." The previous manager was always stuck to his chair and had a poor work ethic. He would come to work late, or leave early and say he had a "meeting" to go to, or make some other lame excuse. "The job is your's then", said Julie. "Maybe one day I can trust you with all of my nurseries."
Mike exited the office with a new llittle bounce in his step. He was brimming with excitement from his new promotion. After spending most of the day with Julie going over ordering new product, payroll, policies, and the like, Mike was exhausted. With the sun to his right he pedaled home to get ready for tomorrow. Because tomorrow would be another big day.

"I still get to be out here with the guys caring for the plants." Welcome to my short story: Mother Nature
Mother Nature has been measured, watched through a lens, checked under a microscope, burned with a magnifying glass, cut up for lumber, had her waterways rerouted, and is now on the verge of a total collapse. That is until now, new technologies have been discovered, and the people of earth are about to be saved from global warming. The hype is building, and mother nature is ready, but are we?
I will be posting a new chapter every few days or so. Expect chapter one tonight if I can manage to stay up long enough. I will get the follow buttons up so you all can be notified if you want to follow this sci-fi thriller story written by none other than myself. I don't think I am copying anyone's ideas here, this will all be original work with original characters. Good night all and good reading!
